Music - Middle School

Middle School Music - by Gretchen Moritz

“Music ….. It gives soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination…”-Plato
Music is Science
Music is Mathematics
Music is History
Music is Physical Education
But most of all Music is an art form that allows kids to think creatively, listen intently, work as a team, develop discipline, and explore the world around them in a way like no other.

Every Middle School child attends a general music class twice a week.  Our framework for that class is the grade specific core curriculum. I work to present that information to kids with interactive lessons and experiences.   We listen to music from the great composers of the past and connect what we know and hear with historical events, or trends in music that followed, or societal impact of that music.  We also spend a good deal of class time learning musical elements in the truest sense of experiential learning.   Practicing a piece and creating music on any instrument is powerful instantaneous feedback.

Right now, kids are working on pieces of music to present to parents at the Night of the Arts in December.  This is the fourth annual Night of the Arts event whereby the Middle School art and music department team up with PTO to celebrate music, art, kids, and RMAE.  You will have the opportunity to not only watch an amazing display of fun music created by our Middle School kids but also contribute money to our wonderful school through bidding on the kid art.  This year, our theme is Hawaii.  Stay tuned for more details to follow.

Outside of the school day, music opportunities abound.  Our school offers choir, orchestra, and musical theater.  Grade school and Middle School is a fabulous time for kids to venture out and explore the arts beyond what we can do in general music class.   Our choir has been invited to perform at the Mountain Area chorale festival on November 8th.  Please contact me gmoritz@rmae.org if your child is interested in either Jr. Choir or Middle School choir.  They still have time to join.   Please also mark November 16th down on your calendar to come watch our 3rd - 5th grade musical theater company perform “We Haz Jazz” at Center Stage.  Lastly, mark December 1st down on your calendars for Middle School musical tryouts.  I’m excited to announce our spring musical: the new Broadway “Cinderella”.   Check out our fun picture loaded website for more information www.rmymusicals.com.
